Mpho Skeef is a name to watch out for. You might not know much about her (I didn’t until I read this), but here’s something interesting. Her dad is none other then Sipho ‘Hotsticks’ Mabuse. She was born in SA, but has lived in London for most of her life. Now the young starlet, who was born in South Africa, is getting ready to release her debut album Pop Art- due for release on the 13th of July.
‘Pop Art’ is the creation of genre–defying singer, songwriter and producer, MPHO. Says Mpho, “It’s a straight-up pop record and has been a full and varied lifetime in the making,” There’s a lot to talk about with me”. And it’s a statement such as this one that makes me want to go and buy the album and also even more keen to interview her. Pop Art according to her encapsulates – pop music with sophistication, sass and subtlety.
More about Mpho
- She writes her own music, is a music teacher, she paints and writes poetry
- She’s been a back-up singer for Ms Dynamite and Natasha Bedingfield. She’s apparently also done work with the Basement Jaxx, but I haven’t got any confirmation on that as yet
On her official MySpace blog account she says, “It’s funny how intertwined my music is with my politics and my upbringing,” she concludes. “I’m black, and I’m white – culturally and in my blood I’m both of those things, so why can’t I be what I am? That’s me – and my music is the same.”
There will be more to come on Mpho right here on the Off The Charts Blog, so stay tuned!
