From now until September you can expect many blog posts on Nelly Furtado. I am a big fan! 3 albums and a dvd later
I’m also getting ready to get me a copy of her debut Spanish album called “Mi Plan”. Interesting story on her website on how this album came about. Nelly and her friend, guitarist James Bryan were apparently trying to write a song called “My Plan”. After a few hours of trying to write in English and then Portuguese, Alex Cuba—a Cuban-Canadian singer suggested she try and write the song in Spanish. That she did and more songs followed in that vain. Plus after the success of “Loose”, the promo, the touring and more, Furtado told Monsters and Critics that she was ‘creativly exhausted’. “I was physically tired and I wasn’t feeling inspired. It was almost as if I lost my pop inspiration to write in English. I just needed a new outlet, and I found it by writing in Spanish.”
The “Say It Right” star, who was born to Portuguese parents in Canada, isn’t a 100% fluent in Spanish, but she says that writing and singing in another language was “liberating” “Mi Plan” will be released on the 15th of September. It’s in collaboration with her own record label, Nellstar and Universal Music Latin America. This is of course the follow up album to her platinum selling 2006 album, “Loose,” which sold in excess of 10million copies worldwide. There are mixed reports doing the rounds on the web, with some saying Furtado is being a bit ambitious releasing only Spanish songs (there will be no English tracks on this one) but true fans will follow her because of her melodies and her sound. I’m one of them. I might not understand what she’s singing about, but the tonality in her voice, the music and melodies would be good for me. She is also really switched on when it comes to her fans and I do believe that she will cater to those who want to know more about the meaning behind the songs. Furtado also hasn’t ruled out recording English versions, “If any of the songs is a big crossover hit, then maybe I’ll attempt it,” she says. “But I wouldn’t do it unless I go to the studio and it works. That’s why I did the Spanish album, so it could be its own, breathing thing.”
Universal is rolling out a massive online campaign and already her Twitter profile is active. Plus there are facebook links and more on her official site. Itunes will also be involved, with four songs off the album being released to fans before the actual release of “Mi Plan” Looking forward to it….
