Hanging with Nicole Fox in Lagos, Nigeria

When I hear the name or read about Nicole Fox (or Mansour now) I think about the larger than life radio and TV personality. She rocked the early mornings on national station, 5FM for a number of years before cracking the big time in the evenings. She became a household name in the country and everyone loved her.

On a personal note she (next to only three others) is the reason why I do what I do. She studied at Rhodes University; she worked on the station I’ve always longed to work for and she became a well-known and respected entertainer in the local industry. So you must imagine how bummed I was to hear that she was moving on a few years ago, but like much in life change is a guarantee and it’s often for the best – and for Nicole it was exactly that. After getting married, the star and her hubby packed their bags and headed up to Lagos, Nigeria to begin their new chapter. Fast track almost five years later (already) and the star is still rocking it up in one of Africa’s busiest cities.

While I was up in Lagos, I got to sit down with Fox to find out more about her exciting adventure up in West Africa.

JVB: Nicole welcome to JVB Online. Let’s get straight to it, tell me about the last five years and this crazy adventure of yours:

Nicole Fox: First of all I can’t believe it’s nearly five years in May. It’s been such an adventure. It’s been totally exciting. It’s been a complete diversion in my life. I never would’ve guessed that this would’ve happened to me, but then again I did make the choice and it has been absolutely the right thing for me. It has been crazy, it’s been frustrating. I’ve so many challenges of the stupidest things. I have learned a lot and I’ve grown as a person. I’ve had a great time.

JVB: How best would you describe Lagos?

Nicole Fox: Lagos is a bustling, heaving, throbbing, crazy city. Its none stop and someone kind of described it well. It’s like an assault on your senses. It’s noisy, it’s smelly, it’s bright it’s hot it’s humid. The elements are pretty harsh, but for that reason alone it’s crazy. Totally chaos but yet it operates on its own system and once you figure that system out, man you move and you shake.

JVB:I’ve just used the term “just now”. When last did you hear that?

Nicole Fox:  (Laughs) You’re not going to believe this but I actually caught my husband saying now-now recently. “Ja, I’ll come and do it now now” and I was like what? I thought to myself I have totally converted you man.  It only took four or five years (laughs). He’s an honorary South African now.

JVB: Tell me a little more about your current projects…

Nicole Fox: Well basically my current project first and foremost is my family. So that is what this chapter in my life is all about. I was quite clear that that is what I wanted, that was my priority to create a family. So my number one priority is my son Deen, who is now thirteen months old. He’s the light of my life, he’s just amazing and my husband and I have such a blast with him. He’s so cool, so much fun and we’re absolutely loving it.

Hear more from Fox and what she has to say about being a mom and also what she’s working on.

JVB: You head home as often as you can but there must be a few things you really miss about SA?

Nicole Fox: What do I miss most about South Africa? First and foremost it would have to be family and friends. It such a cliché answer but when you’re away from them you really miss them. Number two would have to be oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful. I miss the trees, the beautiful weather, the blue skies, the Gauteng sunset and the thundershowers. Oh I miss it so much. And then of course I have to say I miss Woolworths (laughs).

JVB: What do you miss specifically?

Nicole Fox: Everything. I miss being able to walk into a store and have quality products available like that. I really miss rusks. I cannot buy buttermilk here. A friend of mine recently decided to conduct an experiment and posted a Tupperware of homemade rusks from Cape Town. He took my address and we thought that’s it. It would never reach. Twenty days later it arrived at my door. Can you believe it?  Needless to say I scoffed all of them in its entirety in two days. Deen loves rusks (laughs).

JVB: It’s only five hours to Lagos from Johannesburg. If anyone is heading up to the city, what three could they do when they come to Lagos?

Nicole Fox: Coming to Lagos I would say that the number one thing you should do is to arrange on a Sunday a day out to the beach.  A day out at the beach is just amazing. There are untouched beaches, palm trees everywhere. It’s beautiful and an absolute must-do. So chat to your hotel, your guest services about doing that. The other for tourists to do would be a visit to Leki Market, which is a wonderfully huge market with lots of West African crafts, trinkets, beautiful textiles, beads – and it’s all negotiable. The one thing you have to learn in Lagos is to negotiate.

The other thing about Lagos is it functions very much by word of mouth. You really need to speak to people, ask them where to go because there are gems but you have to find them.  So don’t take it

We hope she’ll be back in the country soon, doing what she does best . We want that voice on radio again ;)

The Twins hanging up their YFM headphones

The Twins

If there’s one thing we can be certain about it’s that change will happen whether we like it or not. This time of the year is when loads of radio personalities go into contract negotiations with their employers and potential employers. The result of these negotiations is often heard in the first week of April. As an aspiring radio personality myself, I feel for these professionals.

So with that in mind, here is the first of, no doubt, many changes to come. The Twins, Hlelo and Ntando Masina will be leaving youth station, YFM at the end of March. Read the official release below:

Johannesburg, Monday 04 February 2013 – YFM announced today that, after 5 years on air, YFM twins Hlelo and Ntando Masina, will be leaving the station at the end of March 2013.

“Line-up changes are common practice in the radio industry, particularly with a youth station like YFM. After careful consideration of all aspects of our on air offering, we have decided to make the necessary changes to YFM’s Programming, and unfortunately the Twins will no longer be with us from the 1st of April 2013” said Programming Manager Tumelo Diaho Monaheng “In as much as we are totally committed to the development of young talent – like the Twins, we are also continually looking for new ways to enhance our station with new and exciting personalities”.

Black Tie & Barefoot NYE in Jozi

W5

I can’t speak on behalf of those to the left and right of the African continent, but I can vouch for millions of South Africans when I say summer in the Southern Hemisphere is amazeballs. We get to enjoy the outdoors, have braais (barbeques) with friends and family, people are in good moods and it’s just brilliant. Add the festive season into the mix and you’ve got tens of thousands in their element.

Now every year people from SA’s interior make their annual pilgrimages to the coastal regions for some fun in the sun. The weather is great and it’s a wonderful way to spend you summer vacations. I’m usually one of those people but this year I’m in Jozi *sigh. Alas, it’s quiet so you can get a lot done and kick off the new year feeling somewhat content and satisfied with what you’ve achieved… is that enough justification for me to be here? Haha.

So the big question on my lips and many others is what shall we do to ring in the New Year? If you’re in Jozi like me, here’s one of the many options (I just like the sound of this one though). It’s the 5FM Blacktie & Barefoot (NYE)5  Beach Party. The party is set to take place at Outer Limits Broadacres on the 31st. The station’s Catherine, Fix, C-Live will all be joined on stage by DJ Roxxi, Didi, Vybe & Chizzy, Spinn Bad and Shai.

Rihanna’s new album, Unapologetic drops November 19th

Another year… another album. World superstar, Rihanna will release her new album, Unapologetic on the 19th of November. This will be her seventh studio. She certainly knows how to make hay while the sun shines. The first single off the album is called Diamonds. It debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 at number sixteen, which isn’t great for the star, but the song is slowly but surely gaining momentum, airplay at traction in the market, so watch out for it. If you haven’t heard the song yet, have a listen below:

Is the album shamelessly an admission of her reuniting with Chris Brown? Well while the couple/ she is keeping mum about the ‘romance’, we’ll be sure to hear all about it on the 19th of November ;)

Watch Pink’s new video, Try

Pink’s brand new album, The Truth About Love is out. It’s her first number one album and it really is worthy of that accolade. It’s a rad album, filled with songs that will keep the pop star on the charts for at least a couple of months into the new year. One of my personal favourites off the album is the second single, Try. The video was released last week Wednesday and since then it has gone on to be viewed over 8 million times. Check it out above. Sick choreography. Pink plays the part just perfectly too.

As I sat and watched the video I made a mental note to go to gym and work on my ‘six pack’ because this brother is doing nothing for my confidence, haha. Enjoy the video and be sure to get yourself a copy of the album.

Khaya wins Idols

Congratulations to 25-year-old Khaya Mthethwa. The Durban resident was named as the new South African Idol a couple of hours ago. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he would win, but I think it’s a great thing. He’s talented and the rumour has it, he is a super talented songwriter. So expect magic from Mr. Mthethwa. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’ll go as far as to say he might just be the most successful winner we’ve had to date. Speaking of winning, check out the list of prizes he walked away with:

- a recording contract with Universal Music South Africa

- R250 000 from Samsung, plus R50 000 worth of Samsung products including a LED TV, a printer, a laptop and a camera

- R48 000 airtime and 24 GIGS of data from Vodacom

- R250 000 cash from KFC

- a Ford Fiesta 1.6 Titanium

- a R30 000 fashion voucher from Truworths

- R50 000 voucher for musical equipment from Yamaha

- plus a Yamaha Waverunner VX700S jet-skit and trailer

- and a precision-crafted Shure UHF-R Premium wireless microphone system and a PSM®900 personal monitor system.

The show is done, but this is where it all really begins. I think it’s important to keep track of these artists after the competition, so I am going to do my bit in doing just that. Watch this space…
