Oscars 2011- It’s the King’s Speech vs Black Swan.

Two days to go until the film industry’s big night… the Oscars. So I found myself heading off to the movies the other night to see the King’s Speech, ahead of the Academy Awards. It then makes it easier to make a judgment about a film, find out what all the hype is all about and then one can formulate an opinion as to whether it’s deserving or not. Look, Colin Firth is superb in the role, as are Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter in their roles respectively. However, for me, I preferred Black Swan. I thought Darren Aronovsky’s film was incredible, dark as it may have been. His vision came to life, it sparked debates, conversations and I would imagine that is what any filmmaker would love to achieve. So it will come down to Tom Hooper and Darren Aronovsky in the battle for best director and Black Swan versus The King’s Speech for the best film of the year. It looks like The King’s Speech is the firm favourite, but I really believe Black Swan has been hugely underrated. Mila Kunis was overlooked, but Natalie Portman will come out on top I believe. Who else do you think will be successful at this year’s Oscars?

I must also just say well done to the film distributors in South Africa. All the big titles and contenders at this year’s Academy Awards have been brought to our screens ahead of the ceremony and that is usually not the case. I’ve now seen three of the big nominees. I just need to make a plan to see The Fighter before Sunday. Remember, I’ll be up and at it, blogging, tweeting throughout the night. Do join me!

2010 Golden Globe nominees

Don’t forget tomorrow night’s Golden Globes takes place in Los Angeles. I’ll be up and at it, as usual, in the wee hours of Monday morning so stay tuned. The Globes are good indicators of who will be in the running for an Academy Award so let’s see who the nominees and the nominated films do tomorrow night. Best actor/ actress for me? Getting The Hangover this festive season?

Hangover Packshot

Barring Invictus, The Hangover is my movie of the year… It’s hilarious and all of us can relate. Well most I’m sure. We’ve had the wild nights out, partying it up (responsibly) and forgetting parts of, if not all of the fun night out. Well if you haven’t seen The Hangover, here’s a short synopsis for you:

A Las Vegas-set comedy centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him

I’ve got my DVD copy already… and if you’re looking for a good present for someone, this is the gift to give! You wont regret it and the person you give it to wont be handing it over to a thrift store!

On the set of Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat is now showing in cinemas around the country. It stars Hollywood favourites like Vince Vaughn, Kristin Davis, Malin Akerman and Jon Favreau. Go behind the scenes of this hilarious comedy centered around four couples who settle into a tropical-island resort for a vacation.

SA goes glam for Invictus premiere

South African fans got a taste of Hollywood last night with the glitzy premiere of “Invictus”. The film stars Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon and some of South Africa’s most talented actors and actresses. I got to hang out, briefly on the yellow carpet… yip yellow. MTN sponsored it, hence the difference… it was fun, good vibe and awesome to see and chat to some of the stars who graced the carpet! Going one on one with Morgan Freeman in tomorrow’s episode of The Von Vodcast, so be sure to check it out!

Ninja Assasin junket in NYC: cont.

Jason Von Berg

Jason Von Berg

I’m staying at the very slick hotel called The London Hotel in New York City. It’s situated just a few blocks up from Times Square, a few down from Central Park and just a block away from the Rockefeller Center. So in short, it’s very convenient to get around and is in a perfect location. So last night I decided to go for a walk around the very windy and cold city and I landed up in Times Square. It’s very difficult for me to put into words what I feel every time I’m in Times Square. It’s incredible, so many lights, billboards, skyscrapers, people, restaurants, the works. Love it.

Now obviously I’m here for a press junket for the film called Ninja Assassin. I thought this film was going to be big, but not as big as it would seem it is going to be. I have thus, over the last couple of days changed my mind. For one, walking through Times Square last night, I saw a massive billboard advertising Ninja Assassin. Now this is prime location, expensive I’m sure, but in terms of the reach and exposure, it’s massive. I have also now watched the film and it’s surprisingly (for me at least) very good. What I really enjoyed about it is is sticks to the basic style viewers will expect from the action genre type, but it is also reinventing the way filmmakers will produce these types of films from here on out. The special effects are really good and Rain (who plays the lead character Raizo) performs at least 90% of his own stunts, which once you watch it you’ll see why that is so impressive. So in the film you can expect:
1. Lots of action (duh),
2. Lots of slick martial arts moves.
3. Loads of ninjas and of course loads of assassinations.

It’s gory, be warned. I usually don’t like those films much, but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. I’ll have more details on the film making process straight from director James McTeigue and lead actor Rain, so stay tuned. If you’re in the mood for some action, check out Ninja Assassin when it hits theaters in the US on the 25th of this month, early next year in SA. For details on release dates in your country, check out your local listings.
