The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls is in the news yet again, and again it’s not for the right reasons. The body of a baby was found earlier this week in a bag on the school premises. The child’s 17-year-old mother was reportedly hospitalized for excessive bleeding and it was after that the body was discovered. Oprah’s people have refused to make a statement or to comment on the issue, as the pupil is a minor. The case will be investigated further by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This is tragic and the circumstances around this incident are unknown but seriously, this school is small. Surely the teachers must’ve known the pupil was pregnant and due to give birth imminently? The case continues.
On a side note, I can’t help but feel somewhat embarrassed by the ongoing negativity surrounding this school. Here is this woman (Oprah), who wants to empower impoverished young women, give them a shot at making a better life for both them and their families. And then this? A school matron, Virginia Tiny Makopo, was charged with sexually molesting several girls, the headmistress was fired and four pupils were expelled too for “inappropriate behaviors”. Come on man! This kind gesture is being misused. Here’s an opportunity many people don’t get and several bad apples go and tarnish both theirs, Oprah’s and the school’s reputations. Catch a wake up, pull your shit together and focus on the work at hand. After all it’s only going to benefit you.
