The Twins hanging up their YFM headphones

The Twins

If there’s one thing we can be certain about it’s that change will happen whether we like it or not. This time of the year is when loads of radio personalities go into contract negotiations with their employers and potential employers. The result of these negotiations is often heard in the first week of April. As an aspiring radio personality myself, I feel for these professionals.

So with that in mind, here is the first of, no doubt, many changes to come. The Twins, Hlelo and Ntando Masina will be leaving youth station, YFM at the end of March. Read the official release below:

Johannesburg, Monday 04 February 2013 – YFM announced today that, after 5 years on air, YFM twins Hlelo and Ntando Masina, will be leaving the station at the end of March 2013.

“Line-up changes are common practice in the radio industry, particularly with a youth station like YFM. After careful consideration of all aspects of our on air offering, we have decided to make the necessary changes to YFM’s Programming, and unfortunately the Twins will no longer be with us from the 1st of April 2013” said Programming Manager Tumelo Diaho Monaheng “In as much as we are totally committed to the development of young talent – like the Twins, we are also continually looking for new ways to enhance our station with new and exciting personalities”.

Are you going to YFM’s King of Thrones party this weekend?

We recently commemorated Youth Day in South Africa, a very important day in our country’s history. While many think the holiday has come and gone, some of us are making a whole month of it. And rightfully so. This weekend youth station, YFM celebrates it’s new programming lineup, Youth Day/ Month by throwing a massive KING OF THRONES party. This year marks the 6th Annual Youth Day event, with a production designed to create a spectular gathering of SA’s most current and favourite artists. With one of SA’s most revered producers, Somizi  Mhlongo in the forefront of the team, the night promises to be nothing short of ‘breathtaking’ .

New on YFM this April

The radio changes continue! Sadly another awesome radio talent has switched off her mic. Dineo Ranaka had her last show on YFM last Friday. She is moving onto bigger and better things that as she says will keep us entertained and I can’t wait to hear and see more. But while she gets to work on her new ventures, the business of radio needs to continue and here’s what’s going down on YFM as of today.

Your new drivetime host on YFM is Tholi B. He will be taking over the drive show as of today. Former UJ FM campus radio DJ, Bryce ‘AnkleTap’ Clarke becomes the first white DJ to host a primetime show on the station. He will hold down the lunchtime duties on a show called ‘The Tap Mansion’ from 12-3pm. In other additions to the lineup, Musa Mthombeni of YoTV fame and ‘My Perfect Family’ actress Thando Thabethe have both joined the Y family. The two will be taking over the 12-3am and 3-6am slots respectively. DJ Shimza, dynamic Miss Cosmo, Just Mo, Jose Chave and Zan-D are also joining the team that will ensure the station moves into its new era in true style.

Bonang Matheba I salute you

This lovely young lady never ceases to amaze me. Bonang Matheba is a world class star who has it all.

Not only is she one of the hosts of the hottest music show on TV, she’s also a radio presenter on YFM, a model (newly crowned cover girl for FHM) and a very very in-demand and clever businesswoman. Big up to her! When I watched her on Vuzu’s Top Shayela last week, I thought to myself, damn here’s someone who really has taken every opportunity by the horn and gone with it. We can all learn a lot from someone like Bonang. What she’s achieved at her age is remarkable, admirable.

Check out the first of her monthly web reality shows, where you can get an in depth look into what a month in the life of Bonang is like! I’m bummed I wont be able to make the relaunch of her website and the online reality show tonight. The party goes down at Icon in Sandton and is by invite only. Sadly I won’t be able to make it, but this wont be the last we hear of this lady. Stay tuned, there’s more to come. I look forward to bring you such news and here’s a star I would dig to work with in the future. Setting the intention, putting it out there. One day :)

R.I.P. DJ Monde

DJ Monde
Another star, another talent gone too soon . House music extraordinare DJ Monde passed away last night from “heart complications”. According to the release on YFM’s website, “DJ Monde had been in post-operative recovery after undergoing a series of medical procedures, but had been showing excellent progress and was expecting to resume his role at YFM in January 2010″. He was 33. This is very sad news. I got the chance to meet Monde at the YFM studios in 2008 where he was the music manager. I did an interview with him before he flew off to Shanghai, China for a Smirnoff gig and let me tell you, he gave a great interview. He was friendly, professional; extremely knowledgeable about the music industry and the DJing scene and that also highlighted his passion for his craft. Everytime I saw him out since that interview he would come up and say hello and that will definitely be one of my fondest memories of Monde. It shows the sort of man he was and his legacy and his musical talents will live on forever. I’d like to pass on my condolences, prayers and thoughts to his family during this difficult time. Rest In Peace Monde… you will be missed :(

UPDATE:
DJ’s Monde’s Memorial Venue has changed. BASELINE NEWTOWN tomorrow, Tuesday 29 December at 2pm.
